Opensignal unveils “5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2022” report

By Sam Fenwick, Senior Analyst at Opensignal

Opensignal unveils the 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2022 in September 2022, found that Opensignal DTAC 5G users observed the largest global percentage increase in the proportion of time they spent with an active 5G connection between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022 — a remarkable 478.9%, making it a 5G Global Rising Star for this metric. Similarly, TrueMove H is a 5G Global Rising Star for 5G Download Speed, as its average 5G download speeds rose by 58.5% year-on-year, placing it in the global top 20.

Both AIS and TrueMove H are 5G Global High Performers for both 5G Availability and 5G Reach, in recognition of their high scores in the first half of 2022, when compared globally against other operators.

All three of Thailand’s national operators have placed in the global top 30 for the improvement in the 5G experience seen by Opensignal users compared to that on 4G in the first half of 2022 (5G Global Impact) in one or more categories.

AIS, DTAC and TrueMove H all receive Video Experience – 5G Global Impact awards, while DTAC and TrueMove H receive the same recognition for Games Experience. Both AIS and TrueMove H place in the global top 30 for Download Speed — 5G Global Impact, while AIS and DTAC receive Upload Speed — 5G Global Impact awards.

AIS saw the second highest improvement around the world for Video Experience — 5G Global Impact as its 5G Video Experience score was an impressive 86.1% higher than that for 4G. Similarly, DTAC saw the third highest 5G versus 4G improvement for Upload Speed (265.1%) globally.

Opensignal has again compared users’ 5G mobile network experience by operator in the first half of 2022 to see how operators stack up globally. We have examined six key measures of the 5G experience. We have determined the 5G Global Winners using confidence intervals as we do with all of our reports. If the confidence intervals overlap then the result is a statistical tie and we declare two or more operators to be joint winners. Also, we have used confidence intervals to determine the 5G Global Leaders and the 5G Global High Performers, which are composed of the top 10 and top 30 scoring operators respectively (excluding 5G Global Winners). The exact number of operators in these categories vary because of statistical ties between operators’ scores.

Additionally, we’ve included four 5G Global Impact categories — for Download Speed, Upload Speed, Games Experience and Video Experience. These categories assess the uplift, or improvement, in mobile experience seen by our users while connected to 5G compared to 4G, in the first half of 2022.

Finally, for the first time, we have compared how the 5G Experience has changed year-on-year. We’ve analyzed the difference between the first half of 2021 and the first half of 2022 and recognised the operators with the 20 highest percentage improvements in our users’ experience across five categories – 5G Availability, 5G Reach, 5G Download Speed, 5G Upload Speed and 5G Games Experience.
